The fifteen voice St. Paul’s Choir under the direction of Andrew Killawee will perform from a repertoire of choral pieces rich in technique and tonal quality that includes a notable selection of a cappella, organ-accompanied and brass-accompanied works. As well, the organ pieces and the works performed by Chester Brass will range from Anton Bruckner and traditional sacred music of ages past to notable, present-day composers.
“This concert will be a ‘first’ for the choir,” says Andrew Killawee. “Our group is comprised of local university musicians, longtime members and newer singers. We are excited about combining talents with the Chester Brass, a thirty-member ensemble of professional musicians and talented amateurs who have established themselves with a noteworthy reputation of many years standing.”
Andrew Killawee, a native Haligonian, has been organist and choir director at St. Paul’s Church since 2003. He studied piano and conducting at Dalhousie University, and organ and choral music at the University of King's College Chapel. Killawee has sung with acclaimed local choral ensembles such as Incantatus, the Bedford Community Singers and the Halifax Camerata Singers. He is the founder and artistic director of the 18-voice choral ensemble “EvenTide”.
Chester Brass is under the direction of Commander (Retired) George Morrison a graduate of the Canadian Navy School of Music and Dalhousie University. Morrison directed the Stadacona Band of the Maritime Command and held several senior postings prior to assuming the position of Supervisor of Music for the Canadian Armed Forces. An accomplished trumpeter as well as conductor, Morrison has performed with many renowned bands, orchestras and performing artists including the Bolshoi Ballet and Ann Murray. He conducts and has adjudicated in many music festivals and concerts throughout the Province.
