Halifax- Casino Nova Scotia is excited to have one of America’s most lasting singers and songwriters, Don McLean perform live in the Schooner Showroom. Shows are Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10 at 8pm.
McLean first developed an interest in music at age five. He would spend hours listening to the radio and his father’s 78rpm records. In his teenage years he purchased a guitar and learned to control his breathing by taking opera and swimming lessons. This control allowed him later to sing long continuous phrases without pausing as in the song “Crying”.
McLean’s most famous composition, “American Pie” is often thought to be describing the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper in an airplane crash contributing to the line in the song, “ the day that music died.” McLean states that it is somewhat autobiographical and presents the story of his life and changes in music and politics that were taking place during this period. Music changed from upbeat happy tunes to emotional raw lyrics that many could identify with at that time.
As of 2006, McLean still tours in the USA and in Europe. His new album Addicted to Black is expected to be released soon along with a biography.
